When people use hotels, they do so for a number of reasons. Some are of course there on holiday or vacation and are looking for a way to relax and unwind after a stressful few weeks or months. Others may be there simply for business, in which case if you will pardon the pun, it’s business as usual. Whether you’re staying at the hotel for leisure, lifestyle, work, or convenience, one thing that is for certain is the fact that you’ll want to make use of the facilities. Looking at things from the perspective of the hotel owners, one hugely important facility that you can’t afford to cut corners on is the hotel gym. Now, hotel gyms don’t generally have very positive reputations. For some, a hotel gym is purely there to get a bit of a sweat on and do some form of physical activity. Occasionally, however, you come across a hotel gym that ticks all the right boxes. That’s what we’re going to be looking at today. Here’s a look at the ultimate hotel gym equipment list.
Dumbbells – So far we’ve only looked at cardio machines and equipment. Another fundamental example of standard hotel gym equipment is the dumbbell. Dumbbells are synonymous with weight training and they’re hugely beneficial for people looking to incorporate more resistance-based work into their fitness regimes. Now, if you’re a bodybuilder, you’ll know those hotel gyms are not usually bodybuilder friendly. The dumbbells on offer usually only go up to around 30kg max, which, while being quite heavy in the grand scheme of things, is not heavy at all to a seasoned bodybuilder that lifts hundreds upon hundreds of pounds for fun. If you have space and you wish to make your hotel gym more appealing to a wider demographic, we recommend that you go slightly heavier than most hotel gyms when you select your dumbbells. If you aim for 40kg or even 50kg, this is more than enough for most bodybuilders with years of lifting experience behind them. Dumbbells are awesome in hotel gyms because they allow people to do a wide range of different exercises. In reality, you could train every major muscle group and work your entire upper and lower body by using a set of dumbbells and nothing more. Just to give an idea of what you and other hotel gym customers can do with a set of dumbbells, you could perform exercises such as dumbbell bench press, standing shoulder press, triceps kick-backs, biceps curls, bent over dumbbell rows, walking lunges, and more. Just be aware that some of those exercises would need the inclusion of an adjustable bench. Thankfully, we’re also looking at…
Adjustable benches – Having free weights is all well and good, but sometimes, in order to perform certain exercises, you will need to utilize an adjustable bench. Adjustable benches are great because they really do help you to work your entire body with nothing more than free weights in most cases. You can perform a wide range of different exercises using adjustable benches, although it’s important that you go with a good quality design. Remember, people come in all shapes and sizes so you need a bench that can handle a lot of weight. Cheaper benches are designed poorly and they usually use cheaper and weaker metals. This means that they can’t handle much max weight. This means that cheap adjustable benches are not an option. As the owner of the hotel gym, the last thing you want is to put your customers in danger, so finding adjustable benches that can handle heavy max weights should be your main priority. Always go for commercial-grade. You also need a bench that can be adjusted in a number of ways. To begin with, you want a flat, incline, and upright. As well as that, to give your customers more options, we recommend a bench that can be set to a decline position, a 45-degree angle, and more besides. This means that more exercises can be performed, and it means that you can work for different muscle groups from different angles. The last thing you want is for your gym customers to be fighting over spare benches, so, even in gyms where space is very limited, we recommend at least two benches, if not three.
Multi-station gyms – Remember, hotel gyms are not going to be anywhere near the size of a commercial gym. Hotel gyms are typically just useful add-ons that people can use to get a decent training session in during their stay. In a perfect world, hotel gyms would be packed full of individual machines and expensive gym equipment so that customers had plenty of choices when training. The truth is that the hotel is looking to maximize space by including more rooms, as that is where the money is, so gyms are an afterthought. If you’re building a hotel gym, it’s important that you maximize space and make use of what little room you have. This is where multi-station gyms are so important and beneficial. Multi-station gyms are basically all-in-one machines that provide different workout stations for users. You can get cheap budget models, but as this will be one of the most essential pieces of equipment in your gym, we recommend you go with a full commercial-grade multigym to give your customers plenty of choices when working out. Look for a multi-station gym with integrated high and low-pulley systems, as well as a cable crossover. This gives more variety when training as different bars, handles, and attachments can be fitted onto the machines to perform different exercises. Basically, these machines are like all-in-one gyms as the exercise options available when you use these machines are endless. If your hotel gym has space, we recommend two of these machines as they really are that useful, and they make wonderful space-saving machines. Rather than kitting your gym out with individual pieces of equipment, just one or two of these machines will give you and guests at the hotel exactly what they need.
Dumbbell racks – Finally, while dumbbell racks aren’t really beneficial for training purposes, they’re sure beneficial for keeping your gym clean, tidy, and organized. Rather than having your dumbbells scattered around on the ground, invest in the right-sized dumbbell rack to safely and secure dumbbells after use. Most commercial dumbbell sets actually come complete with a dumbbell rack, which makes them very useful indeed. If not, be sure to purchase a rack that you know will safely and securely store each dumbbell found in your set.
